Henry Viscardi Museum

Henry Viscardi, Jr.
A Life Remembered

Through the generosity of the Robert E. and Marie Orr Smith Foundation, the preservation of a crucial piece of Abilities! history was able to be relocated and recreated for all to see: Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr.’s office. More importantly, the museum allows us to showcase how his actions changed the lives of thousands of individuals with disabilities.

In early 2009, under the leadership of Theo Vazanellis, Director of Facilities & Construction, the Building Operations crew began the tedious task of relocating Dr. Viscardi’s office into a new custom-built space tailored to the specifications of his former office. All items in his office were able to be transferred to the new space, including his built-in bookcases, wood paneling and even the radiator! One of the only things that could not be moved to the museum was the original straw wallpaper lining the walls of his office. However, it was learned that this type of wallpaper was still being manufactured (on a small scale) and was subsequently ordered and installed in the museum. A dedication ceremony was held on May 8, 2009.

Adjacent to the Star Lobby, the museum is located in the President’s Hallway of Abilities!. Tours are conducted by appointment. Please call the Development Office at 516-465-1593 to arrange for your tour today!
